Half a year!

Sam is six months old today and he had his check-up:

Weight: 19 lbs. 11 oz - 90th percentile
Height: 28 in. - 95th percentile
Head circumference: 44 cm - 75th percentile

I thought for sure he'd be over 20 pounds. Though he has super chunky thighs, he still seems like a small boy to us. However, as the pediatrician said, we have a warped idea of what's normal. (At six months Ben was over 23 pounds.) I never imagined my second baby would be so much smaller than my first. It's just a reminder than even though it looks like I gave birth to identical twins three years apart, they are very much their own people.

Sam's doing great. He's starting to unsteadily sit up on his own, which is very exciting. This is my favorite time during the first year, this period from about six to eight months when he's interested in exploring toys, but still not independently mobile. Of course, Sam obviously wants to be wherever his big brother is, so he might explore locomotion sooner. He's not showing signs of it yet, but who knows. We may have a crawler on our hands in a couple months. Oy.

Now at six months Sam is going to enter the exciting world of food with flavor! First up are pureed veggies. I know we all went through this and just can't remember, but how amazing would it be to experience every food for the first time? Sam doesn't even have any idea how amazing his life is about to get. I think that's one of the draws of parenthood. You don't truly get to experience these things for the first time again, but watching your child go through it is almost better. It's all the excitement without all the stress.

All about Sam

Sam had his two month check up last week.

Weight: 12 lbs. 12 oz. - 60th percentile
Height: 23 1/4 inches - 50th percentile
Head circumference: 39 cm. - 50th percentile

I can't believe he's two months old. It doesn't seem possible he's that old, but it also feels like we've been doing this forever. He had his first immunizations and he was not happy with the experience. He ran a little fever afterward (which is normal) and was a pretty grumpy guy the rest of the day (which is also normal after shots, but not normal for him). Luckily both the fever and the grumpiness vanished by the next day.

We are slowly learning more about Sam's personality. So far he's a fairly serious guy. He's been smiling for a few weeks now, but they're rare, so I haven't been able to capture one on camera. Usually he just stares at you like he's sizing you up. Unless he's tired, hungry or wet he's pretty calm. Not a lot of fussiness for no discernible reason. And the sleeping! Let me tell you about the sleeping! I've put off writing about it, because I feel superstitious and DO NOT want to jinx it, but Sam is an awesome sleeper. He usually only wakes up once or twice a night and he's given us a solid seven hours of sleep on more than one occasion. In addition, all on his own he fell into the routine of taking a long afternoon nap which coincides with his brother's. It's honestly more than I dreamed possible because Ben was such a horrible sleeper for so long. Now, that's not to say I'm not tired. After all, I do have a three year old who's still not the best sleeper and almost always wakes up once or twice a night, and a husband who snores. But I am so, so, so grateful that Sam sleeps well. And I try to remember that on the nights he doesn't sleep so well.

So Sammy's doing great! He rolled over for the first time at 31 days old - no joke! I wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't right there, but all three of us witnessed it. It was another few weeks before he did it again, but he can roll from his stomach to his back pretty reliably now. He's had a cold for the last week and he finally seems to be on the upswing. I'm glad, because baby coughs are so sad.

Doctor visit

We took Ben to the doctor for his three year check up on Tuesday. I was excited, because now the only times we see his doctor are at his yearly check ups and when he's sick. We love his doctor because he's a laid back guy who makes us feel secure in our parenting and he genuinely seems to love interacting with Ben and with us. So I'm excited that in a few months we're going to start seeing him a lot more again, and he seemed excited about our impending baby. He even said we seemed like a family that needed a lot of boys. Not exactly sure why, but whatever. And he's on call on Thanksgiving, so we don't have to worry about him being out of town when the baby's born!

Ben's doing very well and he didn't even need any shots! I'm always amazed by what a good patient he is. He sits up there and lets the doctor examine him without a fuss. It's awesome. It gives me hope that his first dentist appointment in a month will go well. He's growing at a consistent rate, which means he's still in the 90th percentile for height and weight. He's just a big guy. Currently he's 37 pounds and 39 inches, which means by next summer he may be tall enough (42 inches) to go on some amusement park rides. He won't even be four! That blows my mind.

I feel very lucky that we have a healthy little boy and am hoping for the same with the next one.

18 month check up

Weight: 29.5 lbs - 85th percentile
Height: 33.5 in. - 80th percentile
Head: 49.5 cm - 93rd percentile

He gained a little over a pound since 15 months and grew 1.5 in., but his height dropped 10 percentage points! His head continues as his biggest stat, though supposedly it got 0.5cm smaller since 15 months. I imagine that was more measurement error than anything. He was more wiggly this time. He got two shots and took them like a champ. Every time we go his doctor comments on what a great patient Ben is. He doesn't fuss and he sits on the table pretty well and lets the doctor check him out. Hopefully he'll be this nice when we eventually go to the dentist.

After his appointment I looked in our What to Expect book and either they dumb down the "should be able to..." section or else Ben's a genius because he always far surpasses most things. You can probably guess which way I'm leaning. :)

New stats!

Ben had his 15 month check up on Saturday:

Weight: 27.14 lbs - 85th percentile
Height: 32 in. - 90th percentile
Head: 50cm - 97th percentile

He's only gained six ounces since his birthday, which is by far his smallest weight gain and has caused him to drop from 96th percentile to 85th. He's grown one inch, staying steady in the 90th percentile. His head is still ginormous, meaning that it's a pain to put on his shirts in the morning. In fact, this weekend we had to retire a perfectly good shirt that fits him in all other aspects, simply because it was too hard to pull over his head.

Ben didn't take his shots too well this time, but he did get four of them, poor guy. He's almost done with immunizations, though! The doctor said he'll have two at his 18 month visit and only one at his two year visit. Then we go down to only one check up a year. That'll be kind of sad, because I really like his pediatrician. He makes you feel like your kid is his favorite patient EVER and he's so sincere you almost believe it.

Needles are icky

We took Ben to the doctor on Saturday and here are his new stats:

Weight: 27.8 lbs - 96th percentile
Height: 31 in. - 90th percentile
Head: 49cm - 96th percentile

His weight gain is slowing down a lot. He only gained 1.5 pounds since his last check up three months ago. He grew two inches, though. He's still chubby, but he's definitely thinning out and supposedly eating can drop off when they enter their second year. Between that and the walking (soon to be running) I think we'll be seeing a leaner, sleeker Ben model in the future.

He only got two shots and one was the flu vaccine. It seems to have affected him, because he's had a runny nose ever since. No fever, but the nose is like a faucet. The doctor also said they do a routine lead test at one year, so yesterday I took Ben to the lab. They took blood out of his arm, which I wasn't expecting. What I was expecting was crying and thrashing around and maybe even trying to touch the needle. So I had a death grip on Ben as the technician tied off his arm and started to take his blood. However, Ben didn't even seem to notice anything was happening. He was still cooing at the technician while the needle was in his arm. The guy got two vials of blood and Ben didn't protest at all. We were both amazed. He was better at that than I am. You just never know, because he was not happy at all when he got shots on Saturday.

Doctor Visit

Yesterday we took Ben for his 9 month check-up. Here are his new stats:

Weight: 26 lbs. - 97th percentile
Height: 29 in. - 75th percentile
Head circumference: 48.5 cm - 97th percentile

His weight and head are holding steady, but his height dropped off a little. The doctor said he looks good and he gave us a whole list of new foods Ben can try. Cheerios, yogurt, cooked veggies, noodles, even ground meat and deli meat in a few weeks. It seems like a big jump to go from pureed foods to actual solid foods but I guess he has to do it at some point. He tried his first Cheerios last night and wasn't too sure about them. It'll probably take some practice.

He only got two shots yesterday and he didn't even cry! The first one startled him and we thought he was going to start bawling, but he didn't. Then this morning he ripped off his Band-Aid while I was changing his diaper. The boy is hard core!

And just because I like telling people, yesterday while at lunch a woman told us Ben was the cutest baby she'd ever seen. If I was a different kind of mother, I might consider putting him in commercials.

I'm doctor monkey

Yesterday Ben had his 6 month check up. Here are his current stats:

Head circumference: 46.5 centimeters
Height: 28.25 inches
Weight: 23.4 pounds

He's in the 97th percentile for all three measurements. His growth chart is consistent, though, so we just have a big boy on our hands. A big boy who probably won't fit into many hats, come his teenage years. Let's hope he doesn't have a beret phase. It'll be disappointing. On many levels.

The doctor said Ben looks "perfect." He also said he's "really cute" and seeing Ben "made his day." Considering that the guy probably sees several infants a day, he's laying it on a little thick. But he manages to say it in such a sincere, convincing way that I almost believe him. Either way, he says Ben's healthy and developing well, so that's all I care about.

Ben was wonderful at the doctor's office. He was happy and he didn't mind when the doctor examined him. The shots pissed him off a little bit (understandably), but he only cried for a few seconds and then he was fine. Considering that we heard other infants screaming bloody murder while we waited, maybe seeing Ben did make the doctor's day.
